Walking in Love Pt. II
Alex Enabnit – Research Editor
This weekend we continued our “God Is” study of 1 John with the second part based on the very big topic of love.
In first part of the text, 1 John 4:7-12, Cal extracted several ideas about love that John talks about.
- Love comes from God
- The more you love, the more you are like God
- God is love
- We love because God first loved us
- True love always sacrifices
- God did this to set an example for us
Then in the second part of the text we looked at, 1 John 4:16b-21, Cal talked about the topic of fear. It probably doesn’t take much to convince you that there is a lot of fear in the world today, which is why this is such a relevant topic! In this passage, John makes the statement, “There is no fear in love.” What this doesn’t mean is that we don’t have any fear – that is normal! What it does mean is that when we are made perfect in love, we don’t act out of fear and act out of love instead. Once this concept starts to make sense, it is easy to realize how it has huge implications on every part of life. For example, you cannot love people you are afraid of.
With all of that said, are you perfecting your love or your fear? The one you are practicing is the one you are perfecting.
Fear shrinks your soul, but love expands it.
Verses and quotes from the message:
1 John 4:7-12; 1 John 4:16b-21; Romans 5:8;
“It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” Albert Einstein
“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” Yoda
Big Idea: Fear shrinks your soul; love expands it.
