Brooke Norton – Student Life Group Pastor | Gilbert Campus
Have you ever felt stifled to embrace the calling God has placed on your life? By that I mean, can you pinpoint a moment in your life when it seemed almost impossible to step fully into the goodness that God desired for you? I’ve been listening to a song lately by Jonathan David and Melissa Helser called, Cageless Birds. In this song, these talented musicians challenge me to adopt the mindset that I am free in Christ.
Press into these lyrics for a moment…
“A song is waking up
Wake up, songbird
We want to hear your melodies
Songbird, wake up.
You’re not in your cage anymore,
bound by your shame anymore,
the walls that held you in prison,
the gate is flung wide open
Start singing cageless bird.”
I’ve known Jesus my whole life, but it wasn’t until I was around 17 years old when I began grasping the freedom of Christ. I accepted that Jesus had called me to something higher and something greater than myself. I took a leap and devoted myself to vocational ministry. As I have been in student ministries now for 6 years, I wouldn’t have it any other way! I have learned so much about God’s sweet love for us. I’ve experienced Jesus’ redemptive power. And I have grown to love taking part in hearing people’s stories.
But in all of that, there are moments in which I still feel caged. There are moments in which I don’t feel free. With each new season of my life, the cages seem to be different. In one season it may be doubt. In the next season it may be lack of experience. It another season of my life it could be that I am not motivated. In these moments, I let my spiritual guard down and start feeding into the negative voices that say, “Brooke, you are not good enough.” To anyone who is reading this, I want you to understand something… Satan tries to take away our freedom. He strives to revoke the beautiful reality that we live in! The reality that we are unrestricted from breathing and living our God given passions!
Look at what Romans 8:1-4 has to say in The Message translation:
“With the arrival of Jesus, the Messiah, that fateful dilemma is resolved. Those who enter into Christ’s being-here-for-us no longer have to live under a continuous, low-lying black cloud. A new power is in operation. The Spirit of life in Christ, like a strong wind, has magnificently cleared the air, freeing you from a fated lifetime of brutal tyranny at the hands of sin and death. God went for the jugular when he sent his own Son. He didn’t deal with the problem as something remote and unimportant. In his Son, Jesus, he personally took on the human condition, entered the disordered mess of struggling humanity in order to set it right once and for all. The law code, weakened as it always was by fractured human nature, could never have done that. The law always ended up being used as a Band-Aid on sin instead of a deep healing of it. And now what the law code asked for but we couldn’t deliver is accomplished as we, instead of redoubling our own efforts, simply embrace what the Spirit is doing in us.”
In the seasons in which I feel caged, I have to remember that I am already free because of Jesus’ sacrificial love. There is nothing I can do by my own efforts to escape captivity because I am free. That is who I am!
Loved one…wake up! Stop doubting what Christ has done for you! Child of God… quit second-guessing what God has created you to do! The sky is the limit… be free! You have the capacity to fly beyond what the human limitations are. Jesus has rescued you. Embrace your calling and start singing!Click here for the photo credit on this post
