Steve Mass – Worship Leader
Have you ever had a time where you felt like you didn’t have anything you were passionate about? What about not knowing how you are supposed to be serving God? You follow Jesus and love Him but not sure which direction you’re supposed to be going. Or maybe you’re feeling like your gifts or talents don’t have a place. If this is you, you’re not alone.
Lots of people are trying to figure out what God’s calling is on their lives. I know I have. It’s a hard place to be. I’ve spent periods of time feeling like I was wasting time not sure if I was moving in the right direction. But there’s great news; God has called us to live a life that’s fulfilling beyond what we could imagine. In John 10, Jesus said, “My purpose is to give life in all its fullness.” We were made to have purposeful lives following God even when it seems like we don’t have a purpose!
So what could be happening when we feel like we’re wandering?
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Are you distracted?
- Satan has an uncanny ability to put distractions in our life. It can be things like your phone, video games, girlfriends or boyfriends. None of these things are bad, but it’s when we become dependent on those things to keep our mind occupied or to cope with life that they can become toxic to keeping our focus on God.
- Are you too busy?
- Sometimes we pack way too much in our schedules to be able to hear when God is trying to speak to us.
- Are you not being fed?
- Seems simple but if you’re human, sometimes we forget the basics of feeding our soul. Prayer and reading the Word are the biggest ways that we can nourish our spiritual hunger. We are designed to be in communication with God by praying to him and to listen to Him by reading the Bible.
- Are you comparing?
- Passion looks different for everyone. Robert Madu says it the best, “Comparison will consistently clout the clarity of God’s calling on your life.” Not everyone is designed to be a worship leader or a pastor, and shouldn’t be discouraged if that’s not what your good at! You were made to be YOU! God has given you a distinct purpose to serve His kingdom and to share the Gospel to those who need it!
These are just a few examples, but they are a great starting point to discovering speed bumps in our walk with God. We need to take the time to evaluate our lives and see if anything is holding us back.
Just one more thought on this subject. A life of passion has its ups and downs. There are days where I don’t feel like reading my Bible or praying. GASP!?! I know. It sounds crazy but reality is…I’m human. Life happens and we can feel discouraged and unmotivated. The important thing to remember is, that our journey with God isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. There will be hills, pitfalls and all sorts of obstacles that will come our way. Being focused on the race is the most important part. We are here to give life to people by sharing about Jesus and the hope that He brings to us and the world! Be encouraged and know that God is on our side!
