This weekend we started a new series called “Potential” that will lead into our Christmas series, “Momentum.”
As a bit of a physics geek, I have to say that I’m excited about this series. But before we jump right in, we need to define a few terms. Potential energy is stored energy due to position. For example, when you are at the top of a roller coaster, you have a lot of potential energy (stored energy) – even if you’re not moving! Once the coaster starts moving downhill, that potential energy is transferred to something called kinetic energy: energy due to motion. The same goes for an object you hold in your hand above the ground. Although the object isn’t moving, it has potential energy because of its relative position to the ground. Okay, that’s potential/kinetic energy 101! Got it? I hope so, because believe it or not, this actually relates to the Bible!
In the message, we looked at Exodus 3 and God’s calling of Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery. There’s a lot going on in this passage too, because if you look carefully, God is actually building up a lot of potential energy with Moses. But one big mistake we can make is to look at Moses’ life and assume that God would only give him potential. In truth, God wants to use each one of us in an incredible way too! Here are just three of the things that can we can apply to our own lives from Exodus 3:1-14 –
- God is with you.
- God is for you.
- God wants to move you.
Verses and quotes from the message:
Big idea: Your position with God determines your potential.
“An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.” Newton’s first law
“Yahweh’s identity cannot be reduced to a single word—even if that word be a personal name—but can be grasped only in and through the story that relates all of Yahweh’s words and deeds.” Thomas Mann
