This weekend we continued our “Luke: The End Part I” series with Luke 21:25-36. If you were with us last week, Cal began in Luke 21:5, a passage about the fall of Jerusalem. This week the passage deals with the end of the world in “The End of an Era Pt. II.”
The first time Jesus came to the earth, He primarily came for one thing: to die as a sacrifice for our sins. The second time He comes will be radically different; Jesus will gather His own to Himself, then deal with those who oppose Him. Same Jesus, just different missions!
In the passage, Jesus gave two admonitions:
1. Know that He will return
Jesus was correct about the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem in 70 A.D., among many other things. It’s safe to say we can trust He’s right about this too, no matter how long He may be waiting to come back!
2. Watch how you live
Don’t get distracted with things that aren’t important. Jesus has called us to live for His purpose, not to worry about the anxieties of life.
Speaking of worry, does the idea of Jesus coming back scare you? If it doesn’t create excitement, it may be worth examining why. Chances are, you need to reconcile something with God! You are never more in danger than when you fail to realize you are in danger. Jesus is coming back. Are you prepared?
Maybe the thought of Jesus returning does excite you. If so, that’s great! But that’s no excuse to get lazy, keep praying for people who haven’t yet turned to Jesus.
Other verses and quotes from the message:
Acts 1:11; Revelation 1:7; Mark 15:16-20; 2 Peter 3:3-7; Joshua 23:14; 2 Peter 3:8-10
“The first time Jesus came to earth, He came as a servant. The next time He will come as the sovereign King. The first time Jesus came, He came as one obeying. The next time He will come as one commanding. The first time Jesus came, He came alone to live with a Jewish couple in a small obscure town. The next time He will come with all His holy angels to take over the whole earth. The first time Jesus came He came in humility. The next time He will come in glorious majesty and splendor. The first time Jesus came, He came to seek and to save the lost. And the next time He will come to judge and sentence the lost. The first time Jesus came He came as the sower. Next time He will come as the reaper. He came in grace, He comes in wrath.” John MacArthur
