Happy New Year! If you’ve been with us these past four months, you know we’ve been working our way through The Story. Now we’re about halfway through, and we’ll be taking a short break to go through a series called “Plan B” based on the book we handed out during Christmas services.
In the first week of this series, Cal talked about life – specifically that life probably isn’t turning out the way we thought it would! Most of us are living Plan B. In fact, this weekend we learned that even the great King David went through a Plan B in 2 Samuel 15-20. During these chapters his son Absalom staged a coup and David had to flee the kingdom. Not only that, but David was also insulted by former subjects and abandoned by his trusted counselors and friends. So much for Plan A!
Here’s the truth: whether you believe in God or not, good things will happen in your life. Similarly, bad things will happen in life, regardless of your belief in God. The difference is, believing in God will radically change the way you handle what happens to you. You cannot control what happens to you; nobody but you can control what it does to you.
Knowing this, there are three questions we need to ask ourselves in the midst of our Plan B:
- Will I still believe in God?
- Will I maintain hope regardless?
- Will I trust God anyway?
Verses and quotes from the message:
2 Samuel 14:25-26; 2 Samuel 18:18; 2 Samuel 15:1-6; 2 Samuel 15:10,12; 2 Samuel 15:13-17; 2 Samuel 15:23; 2 Samuel 15:30-31; 2 Samuel 16:5-8; 2 Samuel 16:13; 2 Samuel 18:9-10; 2 Samuel 19:14; 2 Samuel 15:25-26; 1 Corinthians 13:11-12; Job 13:15; Romans 8:24-25
“Every day we have this choice to make. Am I going to define God by interpreting my circumstances or am I going to simply trust that God is who he says he is?” Andy Stanley
“It’s just the way things work. The fear, the anger, the disappointment you picked up in college, you carry into your marriage. The fear, anger, and disappointment you picked up in your marriage, you carry into your career. The fear, anger, and disappointment you picked up in your career, you carry into your parenting.” Pete Wilson
Big idea: You cannot control what happens to you; nobody but you can control what it does to you.
