“Whatever you did for the least of these my brothers and sisters you did for me.” According to Jesus, every person is His brother or His sister, and how they are treated matters to Him. This verse makes me a little uncomfortable. The implications are unsettling. I mean think about it for a moment. Are we seriously called to sacrifice for others? Look out for others? Care for others? Worry about others?
…This is one of those things that sounds good on paper but to live it out is another thing.
Yes there are many people who are “easy” to love. You know, the nice people. Convenient relationships. Easy going people. But what about the difficult folks? If you were anything like me growing up you had good days, bad days, and really bad days. Family relationships may be remembered as conflict. But there was also moments of meaning. Moments of belonging. Moments of what family was intended to be. Family is a place to be known. Family is place to be loved. Family matters. …people matter.
The next time we label, look down, or dismiss someone let us not forget how Jesus wants us to someone. They are not just someone they are a brother and sister. Love others and invest in others because they matter to Jesus.
