It’s in Your Nature

When was the last time you were astonished by something? For John, the most astonishing idea was the love of God!
The idea of God as a father that loves us can be a difficult topic for some of us. If it is hard, it’s probably because we have a tough time not comparing our experience with our earthly father to our heavenly father. Luckily, our heavenly father is much, much better than our earthly father, no matter how good he may be! Either way, something that may be shocking to hear is that being a child of God is optional. Although we’re all made in the image of God, only those of us who make the choice to be children of God actually receive that right.
In 1 John 3:1-10, John talks about the differences between being a child of God and a child of the devil. Basically, the family you belong to is the family you resemble! If you live a life characterized by sin, you probably aren’t a child of God. That isn’t to say that children of God don’t sin, because they do, and they receive forgiveness for sins. But a child of God’s life is not characterized by a pattern of sin. In other words, sin reveals the character of the child of the devil, but it conceals the identity of the child of God.
So… Who is your father?

“The false teachers with their sophistry were capable not merely of condoning sin, but of making it seem virtuous.” F. F Bruce
“If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God’s child, and having God as his Father. If this is not the thought that prompts and controls his worship and prayers and his whole outlook on life, it means that he does not understand Christianity very well at all.” I. Packer, Knowing God
Big Idea: Nothing will change you more than experiencing the love of your Father
