I am so excited to share with you how volunteering in Children’s Ministry fills me with joy. Let me explain…
“What have you been learning about?” you hear a parent ask as they pick-up their child from Central’s Children’s Ministry. An excited “Ten Commandments!” is the enthusiastic reply. My heart smiles with joy to know that a child is excited about what they’ve learned. Another time, a parent stops by to drop off their child and asks me, “Are you animated when you teach the lesson?”, “Yes, why?” I reply. “Because Isabella becomes so animated when she tells us about what she learned today.” My face lights up knowing this three year old child shares the word of God with her parents when she gets home. Or for a mom to share how her son told his grandpa who was not in the best of moods, “Gods got a plan!” This reminds me how our teaching impacts children, even three-year-olds, in a positive God-sent way. This is my reward when serving with Children’s Ministry.
Years ago, God gave me a passion to teach a three and four year old ballet and tap class at the dance school I was attending. I was 19 years old and knew I had a heart for children but never knew to what capacity. Every year, around June was the dance schools big production and my students were to perform on stage. I never knew how full my heart could be seeing a line of three and four year olds performing the routine I had taught them. The owner of the school was very impressed and asked me if I would be interested in becoming a teacher. For the first time, I was able to show my parents that I could make a living doing what I loved. It was perfect, and my career was on its way.
During that summer, I learned I was pregnant with my daughter. I had confidence in telling the school of this news because there were others who had taught full term, but it wasn’t going to be the same for me. When I called my boss to tell them of the news, I was told that if I wasn’t planning on getting married, I wasn’t invited back to teach in September. I remember sitting there at my office desk, in tears of devastation. For the next ten years, teaching children was not part of my life. Little did I know that God had a plan to reintroduce teaching children back into my Iife when He picked up my family from NJ and planted us in Chandler, Arizona. I did not know God then, as I know Him now, but looking back it is apparent God had this path carved out for me and HAD A PLAN!
Despite my past challenges, I am reminded when I serve of His Word and promises for my life. 1 Peter 4:10 says:
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in various forms.”
Is God challenging you to reignite your passion because, like me, you have gifts and talents to share?
