Cal Jernigan – Senior Pastor

In my quiet time today I came across these words:

“Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care” Psalm 95:6-7

A couple of the words in particular caught my attention, “bow down” and “kneel before.” These are words of submission and surrender. These are provocative words. These words caused me to think deeply about our worship.

We live in a world that both loves to worship and loves to deny it loves to worship.

I say this world loves to worship simply because the seven billion of us on this planet actually do worship—and we do so every single day! “Believers” and “unbelievers” alike worship. Everybody worships! This shouldn’t shock or surprise, we were created by our Maker to worship. So, worship we will! To be clear, we were made to worship God. Only God. If, however, someone refuses to acknowledge God exists, or believes he is unworthy of worship, their internal spiritual “gyroscope” will compensate for this lack of “true worship” by causing them to place something else in the place rightly reserved for God. This “something else” can be ourselves, another person, a possession, an idealized dream, a drive for power or control or any number of other options. The point is… if it’s not God, it’ll be something!

Strangely enough, the unbelieving world also denies it has a need to worship, or does, in fact, actually worship. This of course goes hand in hand with refusing to acknowledge there is a God and a Creator who is worthy of such worship. This denial is understandable and should actually be expected. When you remove God from the equation, there isn’t anything left in this world worthy of worship. It doesn’t take living too long in a world you believe is void of God before something inside you begins to die. You intuitively know “if God isn’t” then nothing really “is.” No wonder there remains no wonder!

Yet God IS! Let me remind you of what Paul taught the church in Philippi regarding Christ:

“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” Philippians 2:9-11

The only One truly worthy of worship is Christ, and one day we will all bow and kneel before him, whether we want to or not.

But here’s the point you don’t want to miss. You can make a choice to worship Christ today simply because you “get it” regarding who he is! If today you acknowledge him as your Creator – your Maker, you don’t have to live a life of emptiness. When you acknowledge him, you realize you have a Shepherd who watches over you and cares deeply for you. You engage with the only someone worthy of your worship!!!

You were made to worship, and you were made to love worshipping! So when your focus is on God, knock yourself out! It’s what you were designed for!

Got worship? Yeah you do!

Got Worship?
