This week we continued our journey through The Story with Chapter 2, “God Builds a Nation.” In this chapter we look at the great patriarch of both the Jewish and the Arab nations.
So God chooses Abram, changing his name to Abraham, promising him land, a nation, and a blessing. Right off the bat, we can see that Abraham wouldn’t have been the first pick for this for many reasons. First, Abraham was a pagan, coming from a family of idol worshippers. Second, he is very old – 75 years old – and childless; he and his wife Sarah aren’t childless because of old age necessarily (although that doesn’t help) but because they are infertile. Besides all this, Abraham has some serious character flaws, telling lies out of fear and even trying to bypass God’s plan by having a child through Sarah’s maid Hagar. Why on earth would God choose this guy?
God chose Abraham because of one reason and one reason only: he had faith. He had faith to pack up and move to a land that he had never heard of or seen based on what God told him to do. He had faith to believe the impossible: that he would have a son in his old age. Most importantly, he had faith to believe the difficult (see Hebrews 11:17-18). Luckily, God spared Isaac and Abraham’s lineage was left intact! You see, faith in God makes the unlikely, likely.
What can we learn from this story?
- The OBJECT of your faith is critical
- Faith is TRUSTING God, even when your part of the story doesn’t make any sense.
- You determine the AMOUNT of faith you have… no one else!
Remember to read chapter 3 before next week!
