This weekend we continued our journey through The Story with chapter 4, “Deliverance.” This chapter follows one of the most famous people from the Old Testament – Moses.
Through this chapter, Moses made six big discoveries:
1. The person of God
This chapter is the first time in history when God gives anyone his name – I Am
2. The power of God
God’s ten plagues weren’t chosen at random, but rather specific attacks directed towards false Egyptian gods to show their impotence e.g.; the river turning to blood was directed at the god of the river, the plague of darkness directed at the sun god, etc.
3. The presence of God
When God led the Israelites out of Egypt, He guided their journey with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of cloud by night. How cool!
4. The provision of God
While the Israelites were far away from any sustenance in the desert, God provided manna, quail, and water.
5. The patience of God
Despite everything God had done for them up to this point, the Israelites grumbled and complained against Moses and Aaron. God was patient with them, even though this was sinful.
6. The plan of God
One of the most fascinating parts of this chapter is the similarities of the passover in ancient Egypt to Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for all of our sins. This wasn’t by mistake! God was preparing His people, even then, for the coming of a Savior.
The Big Idea this week was, “Whatever you need: God Is!” As we read in chapter 4, this statement couldn’t be more accurate! Remember to read chapter 5 before next week and we’ll see you then.
