Before jumping right into the story, this weekend we got the opportunity to hear the Gilbert Campus Pastor, Scott Jones, challenge us all about becoming better neighbors. I’m not sure what you think of when you hear the word “neighbor,” but Scott specifically talked about our physical next-door neighbors and how we can better share the love of Christ with them.
To become better neighbors, we have to first understand our calling. Specifically, we need to love God, but loving our neighbor is equally as important (Matt. 22:37-39)! Second, we need to realize what’s at stake. Some of our neighbors may never set foot in a church in their entire lifetime. Where will they see the love of Christ in action? Potentially the only time they will experience Christ is because of their neighbor!
Third, we need to overcome the barriers: barriers of isolation, busyness, and fear. Finally, we need to practice the art of neighboring – wave to neighbors, invite them to dinner, organize or attend a block party, be helpful, etc. As Scott said in his big idea, anyone can live in a neighborhood but it’s a choice to love your neighbor. Let’s all practice the art of neighboring this week!
Don’t forget to read chapter 1 of The Story this week, we’ll be starting the series next weekend!
