Are You There?

JoJo Nieves – Worship Resident

This is part of a series of posts about Mystery in the Mundane.

It’s late in the evening, and my wife and I both come home exhausted from a full day of work. After a few minutes of rest and a couple of long sighs, we start on making dinner. We ask each other how our days went and share our highs and lows as we cook and set the table. When the timer beeps and tells us that our food is ready to eat, we sit down at the kitchen table and enjoy a meal together. After clearing the table and loading the dishwasher, we watch a movie or read books together until we decide to go to bed to get ready for the next day of work.

Sighted Guide

Tom Kopp – Glendale Campus Pastor

This is part of a series of posts about Mystery in the Mundane.

Due to a disease in my eyes (retinitis pigmentosa) I only have about 15 degrees of vision compared to 140-150 degrees for someone with normal vision.  I also have nearly no night vision at all.  I am by these standards classified as “legally blind” and fun to watch.  As a result of my limited vision I have had some training on how use a “sighted guide”.  If I am in a crowded, unfamiliar place, or out at night, I grab the elbow of someone I am with and let them guide me.  Using this technique allows me to feel if they take a step up or down a stair.  I can also feel very easily if the person guiding me moves to the right or left.  It works really well – most of the time.

Signatures in Spiderwebs

Keaton Smith – Glendale Family Pastor

This is part of a series of posts about Mystery in the Mundane.

A close friend of mine, Cory, recently shared with me his experience the other day as he was searching for an item upstairs in our unfinished second floor on the Glendale Campus.  The second floor has become a treasure trove of miscellaneous supplies, and discarded props from years past.   It’s like our very own Chronicles of Narnia. Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit…

"A Dance"

Adrian Darsee – Worship Team Lead

This is part of a series of posts about Mystery in the Mundane.

I get asked every now and then what the worship leaders do all week. No, we don’t spend our week sitting in a circle singing to God nor do we spend massive amounts of time writing poetry while getting in touch with our feelings. In fact, our week is made up of sitting in front of a computer, attending meetings, to do lists, massive amounts of communication to dozens of musicians, vocalists and production staff in order to make sure our weekend services are excellent. We LOVE our jobs!  But that doesn’t mean we don’t have our days when we just want to come home and pass out on the couch. About a week ago I remember coming home from a long day of planning for our Easter services and saying to my wife at 7pm “I just want to go to bed.” She has been a pastor’s wife for over 10 years and knows that during this season I could use the extra sleep. However, my 5-year-old daughter caught me just before I went to my bedroom. She asked “Daddy, will you dance with me?”

Cliché

Aaron Pennington – Queen Creek Campus Pastor

This is part of a series of posts about Mystery in the Mundane.

I was eating at a barbecue joint last week with a large party of people. I ended up sitting beside someone I have never met, pretty cool guy.  After I learned he was a mechanic, we struck up a conversation about cars and motors . He gave me some good tips on tuning up my Toyota. He knew I was a pastor, but didn’t ask much about that. So, after a while, I finally popped the question….

Is he invited?

Nate Lanzon- Mesa Jr. High Pastor

This is part of a series of posts about Mystery in the Mundane.

I have recently had several interesting conversations with various friends about this concept of what some call “listening prayers.”  The main idea behind this concept of prayer is basically inviting God to speak into any and every aspect of your day, rather than limiting him to only speak into the specific things you consult him about.  We are guided in Proverbs 3:6 to acknowledge God in everything we do… something that I’m not very good at.
