Wes McGarrah – HS Pastor @ Mesa Campus
I’ve made a goal! Now hear me I’m not really the New Year Resolution type, but I realized that there was a certain area in my life that I wanted to pursue more. Let me start off by telling you, I’m a pastor. Part of what I get to do is study God’s Word and convey it in a way that makes sense to High School Students. But I’ve noticed something. If you spend a lot of time working on something, you can lose sight of the overwhelming joy that captured you when you were first introduced.
I realized that while I love Jesus and I love the truth of His Word and I love being a pastor, I would often forget to sit down and allow myself to be overwhelmed by the kind of joy that captures you when you read a good story, or watch your favorite movie, or sit with a good friend over a cup of steamed milk (I’m not a big coffee guy). So I decided to set a place and time that was carved out for just the Bible and me. The goal is not to “check a box”, or prep another lesson and it’s not so I can shame everyone else on their Bible-Reading-Plans (Still in Leviticus huh). The goal is to set myself up to be alone with God, alone with His Word and overwhelmed by the joy that comes through the truth of what Scripture says.
If you are one of those people that struggles finding time, or knowing where to start when it comes to reading your Bible – I would encourage you to pick a place and pick a time. And then…show up. Show up and ask God to meet you. I wasn’t too sure how it would go when I started all of this a month ago, but I can tell you know that I look forward to the time of day where I get to go to the place where I open up God’s Word and learn and listen. There is absolutely nothing magical about our dinning room table, but in the last month, it has become more than a place where I go and eat meals. It’s a place where I go to be alone with God, to be alone with His Word and a place where I go to be overwhelmed by the joy that comes through the truth of what Scripture says.
If you’re reading this and there’s even a little piece of you that wants a little more of God – pick a time, pick a place and open up God’s Word and meet Him. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
