So far in our Love Does series, we have explored specific traits of love. What does love do? In the first week we saw that love forgives. Last week, love engages. This week, love sacrifices.
The idea of “sacrifice” is something you likely encounter every day. Maybe you hear stories about sacrifice; maybe you’ve taken part in a story of sacrifice; maybe you daily sacrifice for your kids, relatives, friends, or neighbors. But what is sacrifice, exactly? Probably the most succinct definition of sacrifice is “giving up something you love for something you love more.” Whether that is time, money, energy, or even convenience, sacrifice is basically letting go of something valuable for something that you value even higher.
Unfortunately, despite the examples of sacrifice we all have in our lives, selfishness is far easier to come by – through stories, the news, or first-hand encounters. It can certainly get discouraging. But if we’re really honest, it’s easy to vilify those who we judge as selfish and very hard to deal with that very same selfishness in our own hearts. It’s not a hopeless situation, though, there is a remedy and you’ve probably already guessed it! The enemy of selfishness is sacrifice. The enemy of sacrifice is selfishness. So the remedy for selfishness is sacrifice.
Of course, the best example we have of this is Jesus, who sacrificed himself for our sins. He lived out an entire life of sacrifice as an example for us – not so that we could just receive the blessings of His sacrifice, but so that we would follow that example daily. So the real question is… will you? What is God placing on your heart to sacrifice?
Be sure to come back next week to see Bob Goff close out the series! Trust me, you do not want to miss him!
