In All Things God

Alex Enabnit – Programming Coordinator

Happy Father’s Day! This weekend we celebrated fathers and continued the “Pixelated” series with the story of Joseph.

If you’re at all familiar with the story of Joseph in Genesis, you know his life was full of struggles. At 17 his brothers sold him into slavery, later he was wrongly accused of rape and thrown in prison, and basically forgotten for the better part of thirteen years. But by the time he was 30, Joseph became second only to Phoaroh. By this time you could probably imagine Joseph could have been holding some nasty grudges, and at this point he could actually take revenge on all of them. But instead of getting revenge on his brothers who sold him into slavery, he gave a famous statement in Genesis 50:20,

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

Joseph had incredible insight about the big picture of his life, and this insight is actually fully explained in the New Testament by Paul:

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

This passage is NOT saying that God causes all things. Instead, it is saying that whatever happens, good or bad, God works that for good. God can take the brokenness, success, mess, and loss and turn it into something good for those who love him and have hope in Jesus. This concept becomes less pixelated when we look at the cross. In that situation, nobody would have thought that God is winning. It was horrible, heartbreaking, and seemed like Satan had won. But what Satan intended for harm, God turned into working for the good of those who love Him – eternal life for anybody who receives Jesus. You see, Jesus on the cross is the fulfillment of Joseph’s revelation.

Verses and quotes from the message:

Genesis 37:28; Genesis 37:36; Genesis 39:20; Genesis 40:21,23; Genesis 50:15-21; Psalm 7:14-16; Romans 8:28; Hebrews 12:1b-2; Colossians 2:13-15

Big idea: When things look their worst, Jesus is at His best.
