The Heart of a Mom

Emily Teterud – Marketing Coordinator

Mother’s Day always seems to elicit a broad range of emotions from people. For some, it’s a joyful celebration; for others, it’s a painful reminder of a damaged or nonexistent relationship; and yet for others, it’s a frustrating spotlight on challenges that have prevented the opportunity to be a mother. Gathering on this day, we must come with our real experiences, unhidden from God, and recognize His great love for us in the midst of our stories. We must also realize He wants to teach us and guide us, regardless of where we’re coming from.

In the Bible, we see many stories of motherhood. And as Cal pinpointed the story of he wanted to focus on, he gave us this big idea: In a mom, we get our first glimpse into the nature of God.

Cal focused his example on Eunice, the mother of Timothy in the New Testament. Eunice is one who stands out as a strong example of motherhood being done right. We can find so much encouragement from her, so much strength and wisdom. In 2 Timothy 3:14-15 as well as 2 Timothy 1:5, we see that Eunice made it a priority to train up Timothy in God’s Word. When Paul meets Timothy and begins his ministry with the disciple, Timothy is already a man of God, raised from infancy with a knowledge of God’s Word. Paul is then able to build off of that foundation and grow him more and more. And we can see evidence of the great witness Timothy becomes for Jesus. What an encouragement to motherhood to see the praise given to Eunice for laying the groundwork for this to happen!

What’s interesting is that we read that Eunice is a Jewish believer, while her husband is a Greek. In the context of the passage, we can see Timothy’s father was not a strong believer in the picture. However, hearing the Gospel and teaching that to her son, Eunice did not neglect her role as a mother to pass on truth to her son.  So we see that, despite the challenges and potential pitfalls in parenting, no matter where you are or what your experience is, you can be used to raise your kids in God’s Truth.

God uses moms in amazing ways. As the big idea stresses, the very nature of God can be seen when it’s done right. Here are three examples of the qualities that can be seen:

  1. God uses moms to teach us what love looks like.
  2. God uses moms to teach us what discipline looks like.
  3. God uses moms to teach us what sacrifice looks like.

The life of Eunice is one that should bring great hope to you today. As a parent, future parent, or leader of any kind, anyone who has influence over someone else, be sure to think through the legacy you’re leaving for the next generation. God has a plan that allows you to leave a rich and meaningful legacy, but we must be willing to give our hearts to Him and put in the hard work too.
