So it’s that time of year again.  Not the end of the year but the distribution of high school yearbooks.  Yearbooks are funny …now.

I remember how fun it was to see how many times my friends (or I) appeared in the yearbook.   There was even an index in the last pages that made it really easy to look ourselves up.

It was fun to look at the pictures and recall the memories.  It was fun.  It was also fun to read about what my friends wrote.

…that is until my teen children read what my friends wrote.

Playing for the Last Shot

What was Said, What I Heard

You may have recently heard about NBA player Jason Collins’ recent admission of his homosexual orientation.  It has sparked so much debate and discussion among many.

“I’m a 34-year-old NBA center. I’m black. And I’m gay.”

That is what was said.  What I heard was a little different. There have been statistics that indicate that 1/3 of teenage suicides are committed because of sexual orientation.

Regardless of your feelings of Mr. Collins’ admission, the glaring statistic is what is going on with our teenagers today.  It is heartbreaking that a teen would choose to take their own life.

Parent Report Card

Have you ever thought for a moment what your teen children would grade you  (Without repercussions mind you)?  What would they say is satisfactory or needs improvement?  What would be an “A”?  What would be a “D.”  It could be difficult to assess because most of our teens think their parents are the meanest and craziest parents in the world.  Raise your hand if your teen child ever said, “…well my friend’s parents said they are okay with it.”  In which you probably said, “..well, I’m not your friend’s parents,” and so goes the roller coaster.

We are such mean parents huh?
