A Crazy Love For God
Alex Enabnit – Research Editor
Love that’s crazy is not all that hard to find. In fact, we tend to see it daily!
Whether it’s a die-hard sports fan, a fitness enthusiast (*cough* CrossFit), or an avid collector, we see examples of crazy love all around us. And although their obsession can take many forms, these people all have one thing in common: PASSION! This passion isn’t some freak accident or mistake, it is a God-given drive that exists in all of us. It is a trait that we all have deep down inside to be passionate about something. But the secret about this trait is that God put it there to drive us toward Him! So in this world full of crazy love for all kinds of things, how can we direct that passion to God?
To illustrate this, Cal walked us through Luke 7:36-50, a story of a “sinful” woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and dried them with her hair, finally pouring perfume on His feet. This was seen as a scandalous act by the host of the dinner party, a religious leader. But Jesus defended the woman, saying that since she has been forgiven much she is that much more grateful. Conversely, those who have been forgiven little love little.
An interesting point to extract from this story is that this woman was not forgiven because she did something loving to Jesus; she did something loving to Jesus because she knew she was forgiven! She didn’t earn the forgiveness of Jesus with her love, sacrifice or humility. And it is this forgiveness and kindness that draws us to love God in a crazy way – not because we have to “earn” his forgiveness, but because we should be so grateful that we’re forgiven in the first place.
The religious leader, Simon, saw this woman very differently than Jesus, however:
- Simon saw the sin; Jesus saw the sinner.
- Simon saw her offenses; Jesus saw her need.
- Simon saw the depth of her depravity; Jesus saw the magnitude of her love.
Which begs the question: what do you see when you look at others?
To conclude the message, Cal gave us three points that we can learn from this woman in our pursuit to love God in a crazy way:
- Worship Recklessly
- Give Extravagantly
- Serve Selflessly
Verses and quotes from the sermon:
Luke 7:36-50; Luke 5:22; Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 2:4; 2 Samuel 6:21-22; 1 Samuel 2:30b; Mark 10:43-45
“We become like what we worship; we take on the character of our object of worship. Those who worship money become, eventually, human calculating machines. Those who worship sex become obsessed with their own attractiveness or prowess. Those who worship power become more and more ruthless. Those who worship God discover what it means to be fully alive.” N.T. Wright
